Sundri (often spelled Sundari) is a landmark 1898 book written by Bhai Vir Singh, widely recognized as the first novel ever written in the Punjabi language.
The story is set during the highly turbulent 18th century in Punjab, a time marked by Mughal decline, intense persecution, and robust Sikh resistance. It serves as a historical and symbolic narrative meant to restore morale and highlight Sikh virtues.

- The Kidnapping: A young Khatri Hindu girl named Saraswati is forcibly abducted by a local Mughal ruler on the day after her wedding.
- The Rescue: To protect her honour, she attempts to burn herself alive but is rescued just in time by her Amritdhari Sikh brother, Balwant Singh, who was hiding in the jungles.
- Transformation & Baptism: Saraswati embraces the Sikh faith, is baptised, and takes the name Sundar Kaur (Sundri).
- Life with the Jatha: She joins a mobile band (Jatha) of Sikh warriors, moving from a helpless victim to a highly respected, vital member who coordinates camp logistics, provides medical aid, and exemplifies selfless service (seva).
